Fair Isle Stash Socks Pattern

SIZE

About a women’s size 8 to 8 1/2

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Height: 8 inches/ 20 cm, from top of cuff to bottom of heel flap

Length: 9 1/2 inches / 24cm, from heel to tip of toe

About 8 1/2 inches/21.5cm foot circumference

To fit a women’s size 8 to 8 1/2

You can easily make the sock foot shorter or longer by following the charts until length of the foot is 1 1/2 inches or 3.75cm from desired length and then working the toe.

MATERIALS

I used stash yarn leftovers (I have listed a generous amount, you'll have a little left over). You can do the same as long as the yarn is about the same weight.

A 40g of Regia color 4ply/4 fädig (230 yds/210m per 50g) in red multi

B 15g of Regia silk 4 ply/ 4 fädig (230 yds/210m per 50g) in white

C 15g of Lang: Jawoll superwash solid (206yds/188m per 45 g) in Ochre

D 15g of Brown Sheep: Wildfoote Luxury Sock Yarn

(215yds/197m per 50g) in magenta

E 15g of Brown Sheep Wildfoote Luxury Sock Yarn

(215yds/197m per 50g) in lemon

I used a set of 2.5mm double point needles.

GAUGE

9 stitches per inch/2.5cm

PATTERN NOTES: These fair isle socks have a Latvian braid edging as a cuff which fits snugly but not tightly. The fair isle pattern is worked in two colors in most rows. Only one row is worked in three colors and you can either work this row in the stranded method or knit it in two colors and add the third color in duplicate stitch. The heel and toe are worked in a slip stitch pattern where you are only knitting with one color at a time. I knit in the ends as soon as I change colors so there is not any weaving in at the end. I am assuming you have a basic working knowledge of sock construction otherwise refer to these links:

grafting with the kitchener stitch

casting on with the long tail method

knitting in ends as you go

Slipping Stitches: slip all stitches as if to purl with yarn on the inside of sock.

Latvian braid: Round 1,* knit one with A, knit one with B* repeat to end. Round 2, *purl 1 with A, purl 1 with B keeping both yarns in front of work and always bringing the working yarn UNDER the other* repeat to end (yarns will twist this row but untwist on the next). Round 3, * purl 1 with A, purl 1 with B keeping both yarns in front of work and always bringing working yarn OVER the other yarn.

Heel

Heel Flap

Break off all yarns. Slip last 18 stitches of round and first 18 stitches of round onto one needle (36 stitches), these are the heel stitches (worked back and forth in rows). Place other stitches on one needle for top of the foot. The heel is worked in A and B.

Row 1 of heel: attach A and *knit 2, slip 2* repeat to end.

Row 2: with A *slip 2, purl 2* repeat from * to end

Row 3: with A *slip 2, knit 2* repeat from * to end

Row 4: with A *purl 2, slip 2* repeat from * to end

Row 5: with B *knit 2, slip 2* repeat from * to end

Row 6: with B *slip 2, purl 2* repeat from * to end

Row 7: with B *slip 2, knit 2* repeat from * to end

Row 8: with B *purl 2, slip 2* repeat from * to end

Repeat rows 1 through 8 five more times.

Turn Heel

With A, stranding B along behind and right side facing slip 1, knit 19 stitches, slip 2 stitches knitwise then knit them together through the back loops(ssk) knit 1. Turn work (wrong side facing ) slip 1 (yarn in front), purl 5, purl 2 together, purl 1, turn work. Slip 1, knit to one stitch before the gap, ssk, knit 1. Turn work, slip 1, purl to 1 stitch before the gap then purl 2 together, purl 1. Continue in this way knitting or purling until all stitches have been worked ending with a wrong side row (20 stitches). Break yarn.

Gusset

Slip first 10 heel stitches onto another needle. Attach yarns D and E and begin working chart 2 on the last 10 heel stitches. Pick up and knit 22 stitches (32 stitches on needle one- round now begins here). Knit across 36 instep stitches (needle 2). Pick up and knit 22 stitches and then knit last 10 stitches from the heel (32 stitches and this is needle three). Next round continue following chart 2 until last 3 stitches on needle 1, knit 2 together then knit one. Continue following established pattern across instep on needle 2. Needle 3 knit one, slip next two stitches as if to knit then knit them together through the back loops following the pattern to the end of the round. Continue in this manner following pattern as best as you can (don’t worry if it doesn’t match exactly, the pattern camouflages this) and decreasing every other round as before until you have 72 stitches total (18 stitches on needle 1, 36 on needle 2 and 18 on needle 3). AT THE SAME TIME continue following charts as follows:

Work chart 1 in yarns A and E,

Work chart 2 in yarns C, D, and E,

Work chart 1 in A and B,

Work chart 2 in C, D, and E,

Work chart 1 in A and E,

Work chart 2 in C, D, and E.

Work chart 1 in A and B

Toe

The toe is worked in yarns A and B. You will use the same slip stitch pattern as on the heel but with decreases. Decrease every other round for 8 rounds as follows:

Needle 1, follow pattern to last two stitches then knit 2 together.

Needle 2, slip next 2 stitches as if to knit then knit them together through the back loops follow pattern to last two stitches then knit 2 together.

Needle 3, slip next two stitches as if to knit then knit them together through the back loops, follow pattern to end.

Pattern

Round 1: with A *knit 2, slip 2* repeat from * to end.

Round 2: with A *knit 2, slip 2* repeat from * to end,

Round 3: with A *slip 2, knit 2* repeat from * to end,

Round 4: with A *slip 2, knit 2* repeat from * to end,

Round 5: with B *knit 2, slip 2* repeat from * to end,

Round 6: with B *knit 2, slip 2* repeat from * to end,

Round 7: with B *slip 2, knit 2* repeat from * to end,

Round 8: with B *slip 2, knit 2* repeat from * to end.

Repeat pattern from round 1 but begin decreases on every round until there are 4 stitches on needle 1, 8 stitches on needle 2 and 4 stitches on needle 3. Break yarns leaving a 10 inch tail and graft stitches together using the kitchener stitch (see link).

Finishing

Weave in all ends. Dampen and block or iron lightly. Wear and enjoy!
